On down the road from our camping site at Sunset Bay State Park was Shore Acres State Park. Dave also read about this on the Internet in a post by someone from Oregon. We are so glad he did and that we made the effort to visit. It reminded us of Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C., Canada, but on a much smaller scale. This was a private estate of a lumber pioneer. The home (which overlooked those interesting rocks in the next post) was originally a summer home and it was a three-story mansion. It was destroyed by fire in 1921. It was then rebuilt to an even larger two-story home. Due to the Depression, the house and grounds fell into disrepair and in 1942 it was purchased by the State of Oregon as a public park. The second mansion had to be razed due to structural deterioration, but they left the formal gardens -- Shore Acres Gardens. They are beautiful.

The beautiful Rhododendrons -- they are in many different colors, but this pink one was especially beautiful. They just bloom from April through mid-May, so we were lucky to still be able to see them.
This pond was in an area called the Oriental Gardens.
