We found these trees (Dan spotted them) on our way into our campground in Hickman, NE, which is south of Lincoln. These are known by several names -- Hedge Balls, Hedge Apples, Hedgehogs (Dave's name for them) and I think they are related to our Sour Oranges -- or maybe even the same thing! The pioneers supposedly planted them and used them for natural pest control. I have a paper at home which tells more about them.
There were a lot of them that had fallen off the trees and were on the ground.
We picked up several bags of them. Shhh! Don't tell anyone!
They were much bigger than the ones we have seen before -- about the size of large grapefruit!
