The next demonstration we went to was harvesting sugar beets with horses. Now, this was really before my time, folks, but Dad remembers it. These team has finished their job of pulling the beet puller through the field and are waiting to completely be unhitched.
The beets are then laying in the field looking like this.
Then the workers go down the rows and pick up two beets and knock them together to get the clumps of dirt off and they pile them up taking three rows on each side and they have to lay them with the tails all down facing the V mark that will go through next.
This is the next team pulling a V Sled which then goes down the field on the area that has been cleared to smooth the ground so that when the beets are topped they can be scooped with a pitchfork easier. The only command I heard this driver give this team was "Step Up."
