Black Mesa

The Black Mesa Coal Mine in Arizona is no longer operating. The coal used to come down over the highway on a conveyor belt and up into the storage silos.

It was then loaded into rail cars and taken to the coal-fired electricity generating plant on the south shore of Lake Powell. (This picture was taken through the screen on my passenger-side window.) The mine is no longer operating -- not sure of the details as to why.

The trains ran on electricity provided through these lines just like the old streetcars in towns used to.
