He's happy because he finally got to Carlsbad Caverns -- a place he has been wanting to visit for a long time. Behind him is a stalactite and a stalagmite which have grown together to form a column -- and that takes a really, really long time!
Although you could take any pictures you wanted, most of them don't turn out well because the flash just gets lost in the darkness. This one is of "Green Lake" which really isn't very big at all but was the most water we saw in the cave.
