Yes . . . folks -- it really did happen! We were leaving our campsite to go into the town of Artesia, and instead of going on the highway which we knew would get us right into town (24 highway miles), we went on one of Dave's famous "rides" and were heading straight as a bullet due east (we both agreed on that!) and would have been in the Texas panhandle very soon! Now going due east does not get you to a town that is north of you in my book. So, he finally decided to make a left turn on one of the roads. Now, granted, we saw a lot of the oil and gas drilling operations in this part of New Mexico, but pretty much when you've seen one, you've seen them all if you know what I mean! Then, when he did stop to ask for directions at this field office, he wasn't sure whether the man meant to continue on the road we were on or make a turn at the next crossroads. Finally, we got into Artesia driving from the east when we should have driven into Artesia from the south -- and it only took us a little more than double the time of what it should have! He says he has never been lost, but I think this was the time he was!
